Indonesia has fundamentally rewritten the rules of its resource economy. A series of export bans — first on nickel ore (2020), then bauxite (2023) — forced global commodity flows to relocate. The country is now building the industrial infrastructure to process its own wealth.

Nickel ore export ban
Indonesia banned raw nickel ore exports, forcing global supply chains — including Chinese and Korean battery producers — to relocate processing to Indonesia. It was one of the most consequential commodity policy decisions of the decade.
